April 27, 2022 - Dublin, Ohio

AmeriHealth Caritas Ohio, a managed care organization slated to begin serving Ohio Medicaid enrollees in July 2022 and part of the AmeriHealth Caritas Family of Companies, announced today the appointment of Steven Spalding, M.D., to the role of market chief medical officer.

An award-winning pediatrician, rheumatologist, and physician executive, Dr. Spalding has held clinical leadership roles at major hospitals and health systems such as the Cleveland Clinic. At AmeriHealth Caritas Ohio, Dr. Spalding will lead the plan's clinical activities and quality program. He will also engage with providers in the community and assist them in transitioning to value-based care.

"Steve's background in Ohio health care and relationships with Ohio health care providers serving Medicaid enrollees will help us provide the level of service Ohioans expect from their health plans," said AmeriHealth Caritas Ohio Market President Mark Grippi. "We're building a team with deep Ohio roots and which knows first-hand the people and communities of this state. And we're proud to have Dr. Spalding as part of that team."

Dr. Spalding most recently served as physician vice president of population health at Akron Children's Hospital, where his accomplishments included leading the development of the hospital's accountable care organization, aligning its quality metric portfolio with payer incentive programs, and creating a care coordination program for children on Medicaid. Dr. Spalding previously spent eight years as a staff physician and administrator at the Cleveland Clinic where he played a key role in developing data and analytical solutions to support movement to value-based care.

"As a native Ohioan who grew up in an underserved area, I'm excited to join AmeriHealth Caritas as it brings its mission to Ohio," said Dr. Spalding. "Ohio's redesigned, next generation of Medicaid managed care program includes a number of valuable innovations that will benefit Ohioans most in need, and AmeriHealth Caritas' approach to Medicaid aligns with those innovations."

Dr. Spalding is a graduate of Wright State University School of Medicine, and completed his residency in categorical pediatrics as well as a fellowship in pediatric rheumatology at Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh. He received the American College of Rheumatology's Distinguished Fellow Award, ACR REF/Abbott Medical's Student Research Preceptorship, and Cleveland Clinic's Caregiver Award.
